The movie, Prince of Persia, was refreshing to my taste buds. Not only does it keep your attention the entire time it reminds me of the days of Indiana Jones with a side of National Treasure. Like the Indian Jones trilogy it was filled with twists/turns and good clean adventure with a poignant “underdog-makes-the-right-decision” ending.

What I love most about Prince of Persia was that it was great for the family! Now… by “family”, I’m talking about your BOYS. This is definitely an action/adventure “boy” movie. While it had a touch of the two leads gleaming into each others eyes — with a beautiful kiss… it kept the romance at bay (just what a 10 year old ordered). But more than that… it didn’t have any raunchy innuendoes or sexy scenes that I would have to cover my kids’ eyes.

It did have some scenes of blood (by no means 300 or Lord of The Rings). For smaller kids… the scenes with the snakes or the evil “Hassassins” (especially the one with the gnarly face) might be a little intense. But on the whole… your boys 10 and up should be able to handle it (YOU be the judge with your individual child). Girls may love the Princess… but it seems that was the only bundle left for the girls.

Most of the stunts were jumps off of buildings, knocking guys to the ground, and sword fights. The first scenes reminded me of Aladdin.

As far as language — I’m not really sure. My wife and I walked away saying, “was there any bad language in that?” — but, you know, after you’ve heard so many times… sometimes you don’t hear it. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is rated PG-13 for “intense sequences of violence and action.” and might have gotten away with a rating of PG.

Have you ever played Sequence? What a great game to play. It’s really easy!

Deal out the cards, play a card from your hand, place a chip on a corresponding space on the game board. As soon as you have FIVE in the ROW… it’s a SEQUENCE! The kick to the game is that the JACKS are WILD. Two-eyed Jacks are Wild and One-eyed Jacks allow you to remove an opponents chip. I bet you never paid attention to the fact that your Jacks had One or Two eyes. Well… actually they both have two eyes… but one is always looking sideways… so you only see ONE.

We just recently re-watched Flushed Away again… and I was reminded of how great this movie was.

I’m a huge PIXAR movie lover and DreamWorks usually ends up in a clean second — but this time — this DreamWorks movie crossed the finished line first. The music and lines are classic. The screaming slugs that sing are second to none. It was a great family-friendly movie for all.

There is one part where the female mice pants are pulled down while getting away – unveiling some blue long-underwear… but nothing revealing at all.

Overall the movie is a flood of fun with plenty of humor for adults. Your entire family will enjoy this movie.

I don’t know how I missed this 2004 Disney movie. It’s a great movie for the family. At the time we rented it our son was 9 years old. It wasn’t too young or old for him. It was just right. Not to mention that my wife and I enjoyed it as well. This one was recommended by @DeanZimm from Twitter.

THE ADVENTURE

The entire movie — as you might have guessed — was about a dreamy inventor who was challenged to travel around the world in 80 days. Along the way he meets up with two partners in his adventures (Jackie Chan being one of them) — who needs a ride to China and a beautiful French artist — who ends up falling for the inventor.

WHY YOUR KIDS WILL LIKE IT

Boys will like it because of the great Martial Arts action that Jackie Chan does. He does all the cool “chan” moves that he’s famous for without any blood or gore. It’s the typical “no body gets shot or really hurt but everybody gets knocked out” fighting. My son now looks forward to watching a little more of these good old martial arts movies with me.

Boys and girls will like the fantastical adventure that the team has. And the love interest of the inventor and french artist is played out appropriately. Those inquisitive about fantastical inventions will like some of the gadgets that they briefly show in the movie.

THE REST OF US ADULTS

There is plenty of silliness to go around for the entire family… and the “cameos” by other actors is fun for the adults to identify and laugh at. They do fast forward the “world travel” by skipping to the next destination — which only makes sense or else the movie would last way too long.

Download this wallpaper (1024x768)

REGARDING THE RATING

The movie was PG and did a great job at keeping it a family friendly movie. We watched the “deleted” scenes and understand why Disney deleted some of these to make it extremely family friendly. Not that there were horrible… just not appropriate for some younger viewers who may inquire about the meaning of the gags/lines. One deleted scene shows the inventor smiling while buttoning his shirt (implying a sexual encounter with the french artist ) and everyone surrounding them commence to give high fives and handshakes for “scoring”. Not a prude here, but I have to think through the eyes of my son. AND, in fact, he asked, “what are they talking about dad?” There were only a few words (I believe 2 hell and one damn) in the movie.

Download this wallpaper (1024x768)

IN CONCLUSION
I liked it because of the creative imagination, the great martial art stunts that the movie is filled with and the fact that I didn’t have fast forward during any scenes for my (then) 9 year old.

Mario Kart for the Wii is no doubt a fun family video game!

It is “On Like Donkey Kong” — that’s what you usually hear from me when we’re sitting down to some Mario Kart. My son (10 yrs old in Nov) and my wife (undisclosed age for my safety) and I (38 yrs old) all sit down to play a round of Mario Kart on a regular basis.

Sure, at first we played 24-7 and couldn’t get enough. And even though we’ve played other games… we always come back to Mario Kart.

(I must note that my wife is NOT a gamer. She doesn’t care for video games at all. But she loves Mario Kart — probably because she can actually compete. She’s usually the one announcing “It’s time for Mario Kart” after the dishes are done)

Mario Kart is one of the top Wii games created for several reasons:

DRIVABILITY — When they did Mario Kart, they did it right. Not only do the controls feel right, but it doesn’t make you dizzy. Some games that I’ve played where there is fast action (MonkeyBall with my son) makes me completely dizzy because the “reaction to control” feel is off. But not with Mario Kart. It makes for some great driving.

ZANY ANTICS — We love the personality of the characters and the fun that you can have with the arsenal of firepower that you carry (green shells, red shells, banana peels)

CHALLENGE — It has a good balance of leveling vs challenge. In other words… any age can do it because it’s easy to learn… but they have challenges for advanced users. It also has the ability to play others online. We love to jump online and challenge friends… it makes the span of distance between friends a little less.

If you’re looking for a great family game that everyone can do (and it’s safe for all ages) then Mario Kart is the game.

TIPS AND TRICKS (if you’re new)…

Of course, you can use the Wii Wheel with this game and it’s fun to strap a steering wheel into a kids hands. BUT… the real advantage is to play with the nun-chuck and the remote. This gives your steering “thumb control” and is easier to keep your vehicle in control.

Also… keep those shells and bananas on the back… so when others shoot a red shell at you… you block it. You can also shoot the shells backwards and the bananas forward. If you’re good — you’ll learn to dump your arsenal right before you hit another block — so you’ll always have ammo.

This movie was GREAT. I won’t say a whole lot about this but SUPER FUN!

While I put the 1st movie in the trilogy (Ice Age) in the number one spot for originality. This third installment of the Ice Age Trilogy (Ice Age 3 Dawn of the Dinosaurs) would be Number One for humor and entertainment! The 2nd in the trilogy (Ice Age 2 The Meltdown) would be in last in all cases… and I could have lived without it.

The entire adventure was fun — while still maintaing the characters personalities and typical reactions. But the new character BUCK had me cracking up the entire time. His zany ways (which I almost relate to) had me in stitches.

I really enjoyed this movie and it was family friendly.
