Mario Kart for the Wii is no doubt a fun family video game!
It is “On Like Donkey Kong” — that’s what you usually hear from me when we’re sitting down to some Mario Kart. My son (10 yrs old in Nov) and my wife (undisclosed age for my safety) and I (38 yrs old) all sit down to play a round of Mario Kart on a regular basis.
Sure, at first we played 24-7 and couldn’t get enough. And even though we’ve played other games… we always come back to Mario Kart.
(I must note that my wife is NOT a gamer. She doesn’t care for video games at all. But she loves Mario Kart — probably because she can actually compete. She’s usually the one announcing “It’s time for Mario Kart” after the dishes are done)
Mario Kart is one of the top Wii games created for several reasons:
DRIVABILITY — When they did Mario Kart, they did it right. Not only do the controls feel right, but it doesn’t make you dizzy. Some games that I’ve played where there is fast action (MonkeyBall with my son) makes me completely dizzy because the “reaction to control” feel is off. But not with Mario Kart. It makes for some great driving.
ZANY ANTICS — We love the personality of the characters and the fun that you can have with the arsenal of firepower that you carry (green shells, red shells, banana peels)
CHALLENGE — It has a good balance of leveling vs challenge. In other words… any age can do it because it’s easy to learn… but they have challenges for advanced users. It also has the ability to play others online. We love to jump online and challenge friends… it makes the span of distance between friends a little less.
If you’re looking for a great family game that everyone can do (and it’s safe for all ages) then Mario Kart is the game.
TIPS AND TRICKS (if you’re new)…
Of course, you can use the Wii Wheel with this game and it’s fun to strap a steering wheel into a kids hands. BUT… the real advantage is to play with the nun-chuck and the remote. This gives your steering “thumb control” and is easier to keep your vehicle in control.
Also… keep those shells and bananas on the back… so when others shoot a red shell at you… you block it. You can also shoot the shells backwards and the bananas forward. If you’re good — you’ll learn to dump your arsenal right before you hit another block — so you’ll always have ammo.
